Saturday Surf - Facebook

I set up a Facebook account last fall...or maybe winter. I don't remember exactly, because I didn't really want to set it up at all. My sister in law recommended it a few times and then she told me she posted pictures and videos of my nephews there. Then the folks at work were toying with it and I thought about it some more. I think I figured out that one of my good friends was doing more posts there than on her regular blog. Anyway, at some point, I figured "What the heck." I'd just use it as my family and old friends connection site. I used my actual given name and said my main purpose is networking (keeps the riff raff away...lol). And I'd keep it very neutral and clean...no raunchy jokes and links...heh ('cause you never know when you're going to be googled).

Then slowly over months I was "friended" by family and old friends from high school. I only have real world friends on my Facebook account. Which means I've either met them in person, or have spoken with them by phone over the course of more than a year or so (actually only one friend falls in that category...heh). I get regular requests for "friends" who do not meet that criteria. I suppose I could start a TheWeyrd1 Facebook account, but really isn't it enough to have a blog for my fun pop culture and gay community pursuits and leave the Facebook for my boring real world stuff?

The one really nice thing that has happened as a result of my Facebook account is reconnecting with a friend from high school. Apparently, she "knew" I was a lesbian and she is too. I'm like, "Dang, why didn't you tell me!?!" In my head I'm thinking, high school would have been so much more interesting! But she had things to sort out. I guess timing is everything in life and it's been really nice having someone to chat with that "gets" where you're coming from because they were literally THERE. Course, I don't know where this "new" friendship will go, but the journey could be interesting...

I created a Facebook account with my online alias a while ago but never used it. Finally I ended up deleting it. For some reason, facebook has never had that appeal for me, just like orkut. I like twitter better.

Shoot, I think I may just have deleted my other comment (Got up to pee, still sleepy, came to computer.) Going back to bed.

I said it's soooo cool you reconnected with your old high school buddy. Where does she live now?

If this is duplicate message, please forgive. Slleeeeeepy...

Firebolt...FB is okay I guess, I only check it for updates on my nephews and my niece and her family as well as a couple of "fan" things such as my college and a couple of celebrities that I really like who are heavy FB users. I'm just not to keen on the Twitter thing. That's a bit TOO connected and Big Brother like for my taste.

Jannie...no double post (I've done that same thing before...heh). Now I wanna know what you really planned to say...sigh.

That's pretty cool about reconnecting with an old fellow lesbian school friend :) If it leads anywhere at all, I hope that you share more of the journey!
I've been on facebook lately too. Like you I got an account about a year ago and then promptly left it alone for ages. Then I went back to it...and now half of the people you didn't talk to me in HS have friended me. I don't talk to them much, but it's a good forum for keeping up with a lot of my online friends!

jennifer...I've had some of those former hs friends that I didn't hang out with that have attempted to friend me...I don't quite get that seeing as I had a reputation for being a "lezzy" despite only dating a couple of GUYS!!! I'll think about what, if anything, I might "share" about the "journey"...heh.

I'm intrigued. I've never seen 'journey' tossed around quite in that manner!

I reconnected with a couple of old friends, too, but I find facebook so deadly dull I finally deactivated my account. Actually, the thing that decided it for me was that I began to feel that if any of those family and friends wanted to keep up with me, they would via email or whatever. And if they don't, they won't, and why should I bother to allow them access ot my life?

I have a fartbook with my online name, it was mostly bloggers that were my friends at first..then my sister found me, and from her, all my highschool friends, even though I dont use my real name. Now my Mom is even on it..I rarely go on anymore because my Mom questions everything I do.

jennifer...well I guess my potential journey will just keep you on the edge of your computer seat...heh.

secret...I would find it dull too, however I have a couple of things I became a fan of like my college for the sports updates and a couple of celebrities I'm interested in following. But as far as the day to day stuff of my old classmates and my sister-in-law...eh.

sageweb...I can understand how that would be totally annoying if that was not your intended use of your account!

i'm enjoying the connecting aspect of FB. In my town, in my job, it's actually a networking vehicle. I also have a lot of newshound, non-blogger/non-tweeter friends and the sharing of links and ideas is fun.

lynt...that's mainly what I thought I'd be doing with FB...heh. Bonus, for reconnecting with blasts from the past!

Still sleeepy.

And you must be having one great summer to have not posted in a while.

Take care!

Thank you very much.
Your blog has really helped me in gathering the information I needed.

Anna...funny enough, I ended up adding a facebook page for TheWeyrd1 a few months or so ago. I also added Twitter yesterday. Mainly just the hang on to my online persona in all areas. Look me up in FB if you want. Good luck!
